- To understand the nature and purpose of ancient apocalyptic literature — what it is, and what it isn’t: – we will define “Apocalypse,” “apocalyptic,” and related terms and genres of ancient literature – we will consider how these ancient works are similar to and/or different from today’s literature.
- To study the Book of Revelation critically in light of its social, historical, literary and religious contexts: – we will read a variety of related ancient Jewish and Christian apocalypses and related writings – we will learn the relevant highlights of Judeo-Christian history.
- To improve our academic skills, including critical reading, research, writing, and presentation skills: – we will attempt not only to find answers, but to question presuppositions and raise new questions – we will share our insights with one another in written assignments and oral presentations.
